Our 3-day venture into the uninhabited eastern highlands is a hike into some of Icelands wildest, most extreme scenery forged by fire and honed by ice. Experience up close this spectacular corner of glacial wilderness teeming with unforgettable canyons, volcanic craters, countless waterfalls and steamy hot springs.

Spend overnights in a comfortable mountain lodge where we enjoy authentic Icelandic cuisine and nightly dips in the outdoor thermal hot tubs under the welcoming glow of the Midnight Sun.

Day 1: Waterfall trail. We begin with a visit to the Wilderness Center which is like stepping back in time in this farmhouse turned living museum. We continue to the national park visitors center in Fljtsdalur for a short stop before beginning our hike today. The scenery along the trail is unspeakably beautiful with numerous waterfalls. Our luggage will be transported and waiting upon arrival in Laugarfell. The first night in Laugarfell we will enjoy a celebratory welcome dinner, relax and prepare for the days ahead.

Day 2: Askja volcano. After an early breakfast we depart from Laugarfell and head for Krahnkar Dam before crossing Brardalir on our way to the Askja area. After our lunchbreak in the Dreki mountain hut we enjoy a short hike into the Drekagil Canyon. Driving for 10-15 minutes we take a 35 minute easy hike to reach Askja, a series of nested calderas, and the magnificent Vti crater filled with geothermally heated water. After a hike back to Laugarfell you have the opportunity to relax in the geothermal pools at the hostel.

Day 3: Hafrahvammar canyon. On our last day in the highlands of the national park we visit Hafrahvammar canyon for a fascinating hike. The possibility to follow along the riverbed has only been available for a few years now since the dam was built in 2008. We encounter unbelievable rock formations throughout the canyon. After the hike we stop at the hot springs in Laugavalladalur before heading back to Egilsstair were the tour ends.
